Singapore plans to switch to its new ERP2 system for toll charges from 1 January 2027 which means all Singapore-registered motor vehicles will be required to have the On-Board Unit (OBU) installed ahead of the transition. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) revealed that more than 93 per cent of vehicles in Singapore (about 930,000 vehicles) have completed the OBU set-up.

Local media claim former actor Edmund Chen will appeal against his five-day jail sentence for careless driving. The 63-year-old filed a notice of appeal on Monday (2 Feb), based on court records. Chen was involved in an accident in March last year which left a 21-year-old motorcyclist with fractures to his wrist and hand.

All Singapore-registered motor vehicles must have the On-Board Unit (OBU) installed to travel on public roads from 1 January 2027 as the country transitions to the new ERP2 system.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced the news on Tuesday (3 Feb), revealing that more than 93 per cent of vehicles in Singapore (about 930,000 vehicles) have completed the OBU set-up. “We are on track to complete the installation exercise in 2026,” LTA said in a statement.

Vehicle owners who have not yet fixed the OBU will get a final reminder from 15 February 2026, and be given three months to install it for free. “After which, they will need to pay $35 and $70 for the installation of OBU in motorcycles and all other vehicles, respectively,” explained LTA.

The OBU is mandatory as the new ERP uses satellite technology for toll charging rather than the physical gantries currently stationed all over the island.

The Central Provident Fund (CPF) Board has launched two new anti-scam measures, the Safety Switch and the Trusted Contact notification service.

CPF announced the new security layers on Monday (2 Feb) to better help members protect their savings against scammers.

The Safety Switch enables members aged 55 and above to stop unintended transactions and prevent the loss of personal data due to compromised Singpass accounts. It can only be deactivated in person or at a CPF service centre or via the CPF hotline.

“Upon activation, the CPF Safety Switch will disable access to CPF online services on the CPF website and mobile app, stop in-progress withdrawals and prevent all future withdrawals from the member’s CPF account,” read a statement.

For the Trusted Contact notification service, CPF members aged 21 and above will have the option to appoint up to two contacts who would receive a copy of notifications for important transactions. The aim of the ‘trusted contact’ is to help spot suspicious transactions and intervene promptly.

More information can be found on the CPF website.

Former actor Edmund Chen will appeal against his five-day jail sentence for careless driving, according to local media.

Several outlets reported that the 63-year-old – named as Tan Kai Yuan in court documents – filed a notice of appeal on Monday (2 Feb), citing court records.

It was also reported that Chen appears to be changing his lawyers, switching from Invictus Law to Contigo Law.

In March last year, Chen was involved in an accident on the Ayer Rajah Expressway after he slowed his vehicle almost to a stop and caused a collision with a motorcyclist as he attempted to filter out from the road leading to Keppel Road.

The manoeuvre, which saw his vehicle going over chevron markings, left a 21-year-old motorcyclist with fractures to his wrist and hand.

Chen pleaded guilty to causing grievous hurt through careless driving.

Both the defence and prosecution had sought a fine but the judge imposed five days’ jail and a driving ban of five years.

Aviation and aerospace will be the “twin, reinforcing engines of growth” for Singapore’s economy, according to Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong.

DPM Gan made the remarks during the opening ceremony of the Singapore Airshow 2026 on Monday (2 Feb) where he emphasised how Singapore has built its relevance by connecting people and markets, as per the Straits Times.

Singapore is able to position itself as a leading air hub as well as an advanced manufacturing and engineering base. “These strengths reinforce one another,” Gan was quoted as saying.

Gan revealed that since the last air show, Singapore has attracted more than $750 million in investment commitments across aerospace manufacturing, maintenance, repair and overhaul, as well as aftermarket services. He expects this to create nearly 600 jobs over the next five years.

DPM Gan outlined four key strategies to maintain Singapore’s momentum:

      • Strengthening Partnerships

      • Talent Development

      • Research, Development and Innovation

      • World-Class Infrastructure
