JACKSON, Miss. — Three people died and several were injured Halloween night when a trailer pulling revelers was struck in eastern Mississippi.

The accident happened on U.S. 80 in Chunky, Miss., a town of fewer than 400 people about 80 miles east of Jackson, said Capt. Johnny Poulos of the Mississippi Highway Patrol. A vehicle struck a flat-bed trailer carrying people about 7:45 p.m. CT Monday.

The vehicle that hit the flat-bed trailer apparently rear-ended it. Two children and one adult were killed, according to WTOK-TV, Meridian, Miss.

The three were on the Halloween-hayride trailer, and some others also had life-threatening injuries, Poulos said. Three helicopters and several ambulances took injured people to three hospitals.

Investigators were on the scene late Monday. Names of those killed and details about the number of people injured were not immediately available.
