A harrowing video captured the moment a building collapsed as a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck western Colombia early Monday, killing at least 111 people and injuring 87 others.
The video shows the building shaking and crumbling as onlookers scream before the structure ultimately gives way.
Colombian President Abelardo De La Espriella declared a state of emergency as rescue crews searched collapsed buildings across several cities, according to Reuters.
“The national government has all of its capabilities deployed to protect lives, assist affected communities and deliver aid wherever it is needed,” De La Espriella said. “The first priority is rescuing the people trapped under the rubble.”

The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake struck near San Jose del Palmar in Choco at a depth of about 107 kilometers, or 66 miles. The U.S. tsunami warning system said there was no tsunami threat.

The quake struck just days into De La Espriella’s presidency, presenting his new administration with its first major crisis.
“The Trump Administration is closely monitoring the large earthquake that struck Colombia and stands ready to support the people of Colombia and President @ABDELAESPRIELLA’s Administration,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio wrote on X.
Rubio urged Americans in Colombia to enroll in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program and follow the U.S. Embassy in Bogota for updates.

Some of the heaviest losses were reported in western Colombia.
At least 40 people were killed in Risaralda, home to hard-hit Pereira, while 27 were killed in Valle del Cauca, where Cali is located, The Associated Press reported, citing authorities.
Nine deaths were confirmed in Choco, two in Caldas and one in Antioquia, according to the outlet.
Cali, one of Colombia’s largest cities, suffered extensive damage. Mayor Alejandro Eder said more than two dozen structures had collapsed and people remained trapped, prompting the city to request additional disaster-response teams from Bogota and Medellin.
“At this point, two people have already been rescued alive, one elderly woman and one young girl. There are more people trapped,” Eder told Blu Radio. “We have at least 12 critical points and 25 collapsed structures that we are responding to.”
The quake’s epicenter was near San Jose del Palmar, in Choco, a sparsely populated province on Colombia’s Pacific coast. Choco Governor Nubia Carolina Cordoba-Curi said there were injuries and significant damage in Quibdo, the provincial capital, and warned residents about aftershocks.
Colombia’s civil aviation authority said flights were suspended at airports in Pereira, Manizales, Quibdo, Armenia, Cartago and Buenaventura while inspectors checked for structural damage.
The country’s disaster agency said the quake, which occurred at 7:34 a.m. local time (8:34 a.m. ET), was felt across much of Colombia, triggering evacuations and reports of damage.

Reuters witnesses in the Venezuelan border state of Tachira and the central-western city of Barquisimeto reported the quake had been felt there.
Venezuela was hit by devastating twin earthquakes in June, which killed more than 6,000 people, mostly on the coast near the capital, Caracas.
