Young man dead after police shooting near Creston; watchdog investigating – BC News

A youth is dead after a Mountie opened fire on a pickup truck in the Kootenays, according to B.C.’s police watchdog
The Independent Investigations Office is now investigating the incident, which unfolded early Wednesday morning in the Creston area.
In a news release, RCMP Staff Sgt. Kris Clark said a Creston Mountie initiated a traffic stop on a pickup truck at about 3:35 a.m. after finding it parked in a driveway.
“As the officer exited his police vehicle, the truck reportedly reversed, striking the officer, who fired his weapon in return,” Clark said.
“At approximately 3:45 a.m., the truck was located in a ditch with the driver suffering from a gun shot wound.”
Clark said officers provided medical attention until paramedics arrived.
The driver later succumbed to his injuries. He was identified by the IIO as “a youth.”
The IIO, B.C.’s arm’s-length police watchdog agency, is now investigating the shooting.
“The particulars of what occurred in the driveway are the subject of the IIO investigation,” the agency said in a statement.
“IIO investigators have been deployed to the area to commence an investigation.”
The incident took place on View Road, which is just off Highway 3A north of Creston.
The highway was closed for nearly 12 hours following the incident.
