Ukraine’s prime minister steps down as country ‘is changing its political strategy’
Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko stepped down on Sunday, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reshapes his Cabinet amid Russia’s ongoing invasion of the eastern European country.
In a lengthy statement on social media, Zelensky said he and Svyrydenko determined they need to implement “personnel changes” to “ensure the implementation of the updated political strategy.”
Zelensky added, “We determined that these changes require a renewal of the Cabinet of Ministers. I am grateful to [Svyrydenko] for her clear, steady, and effective work as Prime Minister, for her years of productive service on Ukraine’s team, and I have offered her the opportunity to lead a new and important area of relations with a key partner.”
The Ukrainian president, who has remained in office past the expiration of his term due to his declaration of martial law upon Russia’s invasion in 2022, did not name the position he offered to Svyrydenko. He also noted there will “be changes among the heads of law enforcement agencies” in Ukraine.
Svyrydenko said Sunday she was “grateful” to Zelensky “for his trust and for his high assessment of our team’s work” during her time in office.
“I am proud to have had the honor of leading the Government during one of the most difficult periods in Ukraine’s modern history,” Svyrydenko wrote on social platform X.
“I thank every man and woman defending Ukrainian land,” she added. “Our warriors are our strength and the foundation of our independence.”
Svyrydenko took office as prime minister in July 2025, after serving as deputy prime minister in charge of economic development and trade for nearly four years. She said Sunday she is “ready to serve the Ukrainian state and carry out every task aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s position, defending our national interests, and bringing a just peace closer.”
On Sunday, Zelensky with multiple members of his Cabinet along with Kharkiv’s mayor, Ihor Terekhov. Kharkiv is a Ukrainian city which Zelensky said Russia attacks daily.
“Ukraine is changing its political strategy,” Zelensky said in his statement announcing the changes. “Each priority area of foreign policy will be assigned to a specific person with substantial experience who is capable of implementing what we agree on at the leaders’ level and what the Ukrainian people expect.”
Zelensky noted the “most important” topic to address with the reshuffling is the production of air-defense Patriot missiles in his country. While meeting with Zelensky earlier this week, President Trump granted Ukraine the ability to co-produce the missiles — which the Ukrainian leader has strongly pushed for amid continued Russia ballistic attacks.
Overnight Friday into Saturday, Russia launched another attack on the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv. Officials said Saturday the strikes killed six people — including a child — and injured 29, according to The Associated Press.
“Over the course of the night, Russia launched more than 120 drones and 12 missiles, half of them ballistic. Our defenders managed to shoot down most of the targets — but not the ballistic ones,” Zelensky wrote Saturday on X, referring to the attack.
A Ukrainian attack in southwest Russia also killed one person and wounded three more, as Russian media outlets reported Ukraine was targeting the Syzran Oil Refinery, The Associated Press reported Sunday.
