Northern California city sees zero homicides in 2025, first time in nearly 40 years

(FOX40.COM) — A Northern California police department is celebrating a murder-free city for the first time in nearly 40 years.

On Friday, the Modesto Police Department announced that Modesto did not have a single homicide in 2025.

“That doesn’t happen by accident,” said MPD Chief Brandon Gillespie. “It happens because of the clear message that we have sent together. Violent crime is not welcome here.”

Gillespie credited investments in technology, such as expanded cameras, license plate readers, and airplanes, to the decrease in murder within Modesto. He also paid tribute to the involved community members and officers within MPD.

“This is a new era for Modesto. This is not the same city it was 10 or 15 years ago,” Gillespie said. “While zero homicides is absolutely worth celebrating, we are committed to keeping this momentum going in 2026 and beyond.”
