Millions of people along the East Coast are bracing for a powerful nor’easter that is expected to bring heavy rain, damaging winds and coastal flooding from the Carolinas to Maine, forecasters say.
The storm, which formed off the mid-Atlantic coast, is expected to stall as it approaches the Northeast and New England, according to the National Weather Service, increasing the likelihood of flooding and beach erosion in parts of New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
The Jersey Shore, Long Island and Cape Cod could see up to 3 feet of inundation, especially during high tides.
“This storm may be remembered for its destructive coastal flooding and severe beach erosion, especially along eastern Long Island and the Massachusetts coast,” AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Jon Porter said.
The system has already caused coastal flooding in parts of North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland and Delaware. A stretch of highway on North Carolina’s Outer Banks was closed due to “severe overwash” on the roadway.
“We expect similar conditions to continue over the next few high tide cycles until the storm passes,” North Carolina’s Department of Transportation said on Facebook. “There is currently no timeline on reopening the highway.”

“Given long-duration wind and rain under full foliage, damaging winds will blow down numerous tree limbs, scattered trees and power lines,” the National Weather Service’s New York office warned.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani issued a travel advisory, encouraging residents to allow extra time and avoid low-lying coastal roads during high tide.
“If you live in a basement apartment, know your way out and be prepared to move to a higher floor if conditions become dangerous,” the mayor said in a post on X.
Up to 5 inches of rain is possible in some areas, including eastern Long Island, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
In anticipation of travel delays, three major airlines — American, United and JetBlue — waived fees for flight changes for travelers from New York City to Boston Friday through Sunday.

“Tides, floods, and high winds have prevented us from safely continuing the build of Oceans Calling,” the festival said in a statement. “Following the advice of the National Weather Service and in cooperation with local public officials, we must make the difficult decision to cancel Oceans Calling 2026.”
The Global Citizen Festival, scheduled for Saturday in Central Park, was also canceled.
All Things Go NYC, a three-day music festival set for Forest Hills Stadium in Queens, N.Y., was scrapped by its organizers. But All Things Go D.C., at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Md., remains scheduled for this weekend.
