Savannah Guthrie returned to New York and visited colleagues at NBC’s Today earlier this week, but a new report claims some hoped she’d never come back.

On Thursday, March 5, a spokesperson for the morning show said that the 54-year-old anchor “plans to return” to the network at some point, even though her focus remains on the ongoing search for her missing 84-year-old mother, Nancy Guthrie.

According to a Friday, March 6, report in the Daily Mail, multiple sources claimed that some staffers were frustrated when bosses revealed Savannah planned to eventually get back to work.

“It’s a viper’s nest,” one source told the outlet. “Even if you’re suffering.”

Savannah has been absent from Today since Nancy was reported missing on February 1 by family members. The Mail’s sources claimed that production staffers were more relaxed throughout that time and preferred Hoda Kotb, who has filled in for her former colleague.

“You think The Morning Show is bad? That’s nothing,” one source said. “These people will steal your chair while you’re still sitting in it. From the hair and makeup people to the producers, you can’t trust anyone, they all talk.”

While the Mail’s sources made it clear that everyone is hoping for Nancy’s safe return amid the tragic time, some staff hoped they would learn more about their future with the morning program — and certain people even thought about how they could secure more screen time.

During Thursday’s broadcast of Today With Jenna & Sheinelle, Jenna Bush Hager and Sheinelle Jones addressed Savannah’s visit.

“She is beyond loved here,” Bush Hager, 44, said. “So we’re happy she’s home. I don’t know when she’s actually returning to the show. But she was here and that felt so good to get to hug her.”

Savannah previously announced that her family is offering a reward of up to $1 million for information leading to the recovery of Nancy. The FBI is also offering $100,000 for information leading to the location of Nancy “and/or the arrest and conviction of anyone involved in her disappearance.”

Previous video footage released by authorities show a masked and “armed individual” appearing to tamper with the camera at Nancy’s front door the morning of her disappearance. She is described as 5 feet, 5 inches tall and weighs around 150 pounds; she has brown hair and blue eyes.
