Forecasters eye two developing systems in the Atlantic; Hurricane Genevieve forms in Pacific

• Forecasters are watching two systems in the the Atlantic basin, giving both disturbances a medium chance of development.
• The next names on the 2020 Atlantic hurricane list are Laura and Marco, followed by Nana and Omar.
• Genevieve is forecast to become a major hurricane Tuesday, with winds of 140 mph possible.

The tropics are heating up as the peak of the hurricane season approaches.

The National Hurricane Center is watching two systems in the Atlantic basin, giving both disturbances a medium chance of developing into a tropical depression or storm within the next five days.

One disturbance is nearing the Windward Islands of the Caribbean, the other is far out in the Atlantic Ocean near the Cabo Verde Islands. 

For the system near the Caribbean, the hurricane center said that regardless of development, “locally heavy rainfall and gusty winds are expected over portions of the Windward and southern Leeward Islands through Tuesday morning.”

The other system has a 70% chance of developing into a tropical depression during the middle to late part of the week. 

The next names on the 2020 Atlantic hurricane list are Laura and Marco, followed by Nana and Omar.

This season has been an active one: 11 named storms, two of which were hurricanes. 2020 is shaping up to be one of the most active Atlantic hurricane seasons on record, according tothe National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
