Augusta County Sheriff’s Office deputy shot, suspect dead
An Augusta County Sheriff’s Office deputy was shot the evening of Dec. 17 while trying to make an arrest, and the suspect is dead, Virginia State Police said.
The shooting took place near the intersection of Parkersburg Turnpike and Miss Phillips Road shortly after 8:30 p.m., and authorities closed part of the turnpike to through traffic while the incident was investigated.
Virginia State Police said that preliminary information shows three deputies assigned to the Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Unit were attempting to take a suspect into custody when shots were fired. One deputy was struck in the arm and taken by a medical helicopter to UVA Health in Charlottesville for treatment. The deputy’s injuries were not life-threatening.
The suspect died at the scene.
The sheriff’s office reported earlier that deputies were attempting to serve an arrest warrant on the suspect in the 800 block of Parkersburg Turnpike. When the deputies arrived, they encountered the wanted suspect and a physical altercation took place.
“I can confirm that we have had an officer involved shooting. I have turned the scene and the investigation over to the Virginia State Police, Bureau of Criminal Investigations, Appomattox Division,” said Sheriff Donald L. Smith in a release.
