Tennessee authorities announced that a military special forces veteran accused of shooting his wife has been found dead after a six-day manhunt.

The Stewart County Sheriff’s Office said in a social media post May 6 that Craig Berry’s body was found with what investigators indicated was “a self-inflicted gunshot wound.” The U.S. Marshals Service confirmed the discovery in a statement to USA TODAY, saying Berry “is deceased and no longer a threat to the public.”

A May 1 post from the sheriff said deputies responded to a “domestic altercation” that morning at about 1:30 a.m. The sheriff’s office said Berry shot his wife during the altercation and fled into the woods.

Authorities said in a social media post May 2 that they had anticipated a “lengthy” search for Berry.

In the post, the sheriff’s office described him as having “extensive training in survival tactics” and said he could have had at least one handgun and extra ammunition. “He is an excellent swimmer and diver, and is in good physical shape,” the post reads.

Authorities did not say where Berry was found and how long investigators believed he had been dead before being discovered.

Berry had a warrant out against him for second-degree attempted murder in the shooting of his wife, authorities said. His wife was taken to a medical facility, and her condition was not made public and remained unclear as of May 6.
