Politics can be a lot. Keeping track of what’s going on can be confusing, frustrating, unsettling and, often, pretty boring. It’s no surprise that a large share of Americans feel compelled to step back from following politics or give up on it entirely.

As understandable as it is to give yourself some distance, that does mean it can be hard to get caught up when something important — like next week’s big midterm election — comes up. That’s exactly what this story is meant to help with.

There’s no need to bombard you with every single twist and turn in U.S. politics since President Trump was elected to a second term two years ago. Instead, consider this a zoomed-out, stripped-down cheat sheet of the things you really do need to know to understand what’s happening, why it matters and how you can take part yourself on Nov. 3.

The 2026 midterm election will be held Nov. 3

What’s happening?

The midterms happen in even years when there’s not a presidential election (they’re called that because they happen in the middle of a president’s term).
