House Republican on Comey indictment ‘There’s something called dangerous speak’
Rep. Dan Meuser (R-Pa.) on Tuesday criticized former FBI Director James Comey after he was indicted by a grand jury in a new case brought by the Department of Justice (DOJ), the second time DOJ has sought to prosecute him.
The new lawsuit concerns a social media post Comey made last year that involved seashells in the sand that were arranged to form the numbers 86 and 47.
“Hey, look, you know, when the former FBI director writes in the sand, 86-47, which means, kill the 47th president, that’s concerning. So, see what the intent is? You know something, Blake? There’s something called dangerous speak. Dangerous speak means it’s worse than hate speak,” Meuser told NewsNation’s Blake Burman on “The Hill.”
“It means it invokes in others the desire to carry out violent acts. And what James Comey put out, yeah, that could certainly be interpreted to mean to carry out violent acts,” he added.
Comey last May posted a photo of seashells on a beach set up to display the numbers 86-47, which President Trump, the 47th president, said at the time was a call for his killing.
“He knew exactly what that meant. A child knows what that meant. If you’re the FBI director and you don’t know what that meant, that meant assassination. And it says it loud and clear,” Trump told Fox News last year.
Comey is facing two charges for allegedly threatening the president via the seashells post, per the indictment.
“The defendant, James Brien Comey Jr., did knowingly and willfully make a threat to take the life of, and to inflict bodily harm upon, the President of the United States,” the indictment reads.
