$2.8 million Powerball ticket sold at Southern California store
While it wasn’t the billion-dollar Powerball jackpot, someone in Southern California woke up on Christmas with a lot more money than they had on Christmas Eve.
The much-anticipated Powerball drawing took place on Wednesday night, and the winning numbers were: 4-25-31-52-59 with a Powerball of 19. The Power Play multiplier was 2x.
It was revealed later on Wednesday night that a player who purchased a single ticket in Arkansas won the grand prize of $1.8 billion, the second-largest U.S. lottery jackpot ever won. They will have the choice between an annuitized prize of $1.817 billion — an immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments that increase by five percent each year — or a lump sum payment of $834.9 million; both prize options are before taxes.
It wasn’t just the jackpot that was won Wednesday night though, as there were a total of 770,270 winning tickets across California, state lottery officials say, which range in prize amounts from $4 to $2,811,275 — the latter of which was won right here in SoCal.
According to the California Lottery, a ticket matching all five numbers (but not the Powerball) was sold at a 7-Eleven in Chino Hills. This lucky player was the only person in the state to win this amount of money; the next biggest prize, $18,510, was won by 23 players across the state who matched four numbers and the Powerball.
Now that the grand prize has been won, the lottery resets. Thus, the drawing on Saturday has a $20 million jackpot.
Powerball tickets are $2 each and drawings take place every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday nights at 7:59 p.m.
