Semi-truck crash closes US-131 ramp ‘indefinitely,’ police say
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The ramp onto southbound US-131 from westbound I-196 in Grand Rapids will remain closed “indefinitely” after a semi-truck crashed, causing a closure that snarled traffic for hours Tuesday.
The crash happened around 11 a.m. on southbound US-131 at the I-196 interchange. According to Michigan State Police, a semi-truck hauling about 140,000 pounds of pea gravel and sand was headed south in the center lanes of US-131 when the front end started to veer left. The driver tried to straighten the truck but drifted into the ramp coming from I-196 westbound, police said. The truck flipped and hit the concrete wall. It was partially wedged under the ramp.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
It took about an hour to extract the driver, who only had minor injuries, police said. The driver was taken to the hospital.
Initially, left lanes were blocked, the Michigan Department of Transportation says. Later, the highway was closed — and it remained that way. Around 8:30 p.m., MSP announced that the ramp from westbound I-196 to southbound US-131 would be “closed indefinitely” until a full structural inspection can be done.
The city said that a Grand Rapids Fire Department hazmat team had to clean up a diesel fuel spill. MSP said cleanup was also expected to take hours.
