Crown considering charges for Mountie involved in arrest that injured teen – Kamloops News
B.C.’s police watchdog says it has forwarded to prosecutors potential charges against a Kamloops Mountie involved in a 2021 arrest that left a teen with serious injuries.
A youth was arrested in Riverside Park on Dec. 3, 2021, following a report of a robbery at a business at Lansdowne Village.
According to the Independent Investigations Office, B.C.’s arm’s-length police watchdog agency, police spotted a male cyclist matching the description of the suspect in the robbery and pursued him into the park.
The IIO said the cyclist sustained a “serious but not life-threatening injury.”
In a statement issued Monday, the IIO said it has filed a report with the BC Prosecution Service for consideration of charges.
According to the statement, IIO Chief Civilian Director Ronald J. MacDonald determined reasonable grounds exist to believe that an officer may have “committed an offence in relation to the use of a police vehicle.”
The matter is now with the BC Prosecution Service, where lawyers will decide whether charges are laid.
The IIO is called to investigate all incidents in which a person in B.C. suffers serious harm or death as a result of an interaction with police.
