    Where things stand

The Associated Press is still not calling the presidential race because neither candidate has secured the 270 electoral votes — a majority of the 538 that are up for grabs — needed to claim victory. Millions of ballots are being counted in key states that remain too close to call, including Georgia and Pennsylvania. That didn’t stop Trump from falsely and prematurely declaring victory while making baseless claims of fraud.

“If you count the legal votes, I easily win,” Trump said in a speech from the White House, though no state allows the counting of illegally cast votes. “If you count the illegal votes, they can try to steal the election from us.”

Earlier Thursday, Biden urged Americans to “stay calm” while the count is completed.

    The latest on key races:

Arizona: The AP called Arizona for Biden around 2:30 a.m. ET on Wednesday. Fox News had also called the state for Biden, angering the president’s campaign, which expressed confidence it can still win. With 90 percent of the vote counted, Biden leads Trump by about 46,000 votes.
    • Georgia: Trump’s lead in Georgia is dwindling as the state continues its count. As of 9 p.m. ET Thursday, the margin had dropped to less than 2,000 votes.
    • Nevada: Biden had been leading by a comfortable margin on election night, but the race tightened considerably, with Trump trailing Biden by just 12,000 votes on Thursday evening. More results are expected to be released Friday.
    • Pennsylvania: Trump’s lead continues to shrink in the Keystone State, and the Biden campaign believes it will overtake the president as mail-in ballots continue to be processed.

Here’s where the race to 270 currently stands:

    Biden: 264

    Trump: 214

The following states have been called:

Biden: Vt., Va., Conn., Del., Ill., Md., Mass., N.J., R.I., N.Y., N.M., D.C., Colo., N.H., Calif., Ore., Wash., Hawaii, Minn., Ariz., Maine (3 of 4 electoral votes), Wis., Mich.

Trump: Ky., W. Va., S.C., Ala., Miss., Tenn., Okla., Ark., Ind., N.D., S.D., Wyo., La., Neb., Kan., Mo., Idaho, Utah, Ohio, Iowa, Mont., Fla., Texas, Maine (1 of 4 electoral votes)

    COVID and the election:

While votes continue to be counted in the 2020 U.S. election, the number of coronavirus cases continues to climb. There were a record 120,000 cases reported Thursday, adding to the total of more than 9.6 million who’ve been infected. More than 234,000 Americans have died so far this year.

Trump’s leads in Pennsylvania and Georgia are shrinking by the hour

With votes continuing to be counted in Pennsylvania and Georgia, President Trump’s leads over Joe Biden in those states are evaporating. The president needs to win both to keep his reelection hopes alive.

In Pennsylvania, Trump leads Biden by 26,319 votes, with about 290,000 left to be counted.

In Georgia, Trump leads Biden by 1,775 votes with a little more than 14,000 left to be counted.

At least 4,300 of the outstanding votes are expected to be processed in Georgia before midnight, officials in Clayton County said.

Note: There are also nearly 9,000 (8,899) absentee ballots from military and overseas voters that have yet to be returned to election offices in Georgia as of Thursday morning, according to the secretary of state’s office. Any of these ballots that arrive by Friday will be counted.

Arizona attorney general: Voters weren’t disenfranchised for using Sharpies

Earlier this week, there were claims from Republicans in Arizona’s Maricopa County that ballots were not counted because Sharpies had been used to fill them out. Officials said there was no issue with using the marker and no ballots cast for Trump or any other candidate would have been invalidated because they were filled out with a Sharpie.

The state’s attorney general, Republican Mark Brnovich, launched an investigation into the matter and announced Thursday nothing untoward had occurred with the ballots. The presidential results in the state are expected to be tight, although the Associated Press and Fox News have already called the race there for Biden.

What’s up in the Alaska Senate race?

Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan was one of the numerous GOP incumbents facing a well-funded challenger this year, taking on Dr. Al Gross, an orthopedist and commercial fisherman who ran as an independent but has the backing of state and national Democrats. Sullivan currently has a wide lead on Gross, but the state has tens of thousands of ballots still to count that it won’t start tabulating until next week, so there’s yet to be an official winner projected.

Gross showed confidence despite the long odds in a tweet Thursday night:

Due to so many ballots still needing to be counted, we also don’t have a presidential race call from Alaska, but Trump is expected to win the state’s three electoral votes as he did in 2016. For more on the wild Alaskan Senate, read our October profile.
